Here's my look back at the 10 most-liked avatars published on Booth in May 2026, data included. Two threads run through this month's lineup: black-based outfits, and designs that go beyond looks to build in new ways to play.

At the top sits a cool, city-styled woman with long black hair, cat ears, and a matching tail (13,159 likes), carrying 628 shape keys across face and body. Let's start there and go through the lineup one avatar at a time.

She took sole first place among May 2026 avatars (13,159 likes at aggregation time).

What carries this avatar is the pairing of a grown-up presence with deep facial work. Shape keys total 628 — 532 for expressions plus 96 for the body — letting you fine-tune the eyes and mouth. Polygons come to △60,176 for the base body and △245,420 with the default outfit. Besides black, the hair ships with silver-gray and beige tones, so she adapts to coordinates beyond all-black.

For modders, a generous set of shrink shape keys (adjustment keys that slim each body part) helps prevent clipping when you dress her in your own wardrobe. Polygons come to △71,344, and a MochiFitter forward-conversion profile is bundled, giving you an entry point for dressing her in outfits you already own. Hamuketsu leads the production, with Unity setup and AFK animation handled by several collaborators. The price is ¥5,000.

The fun of this avatar is that baby-dragon behavior is built in as gimmicks. Alongside a head-pat gimmick, there's even a potato-chip-eating gimmick, so she stays photogenic while you chat or idle. Expressions run to roughly 270 shape keys plus 48 MMD-compatible and 52 body keys, with Idle, crouch, prone, and AFK poses preconfigured. A cat-ear-style knit cap comes bundled as a bonus.

Her base body is shared with Hikarun, from the same shop Kururushippo (at 1.1 versus 1.2 scale), which makes outfits easy to move between the two. Polygons are △92,735 with a Performance Rank of Very Poor. She also ships with a toe-posing prefab, an outfit-switching menu, and MochiFitter forward-conversion support. The price is ¥4,500.

What stands out is how far you can push her hair and face. 17 hairstyle shape keys plus 11 hair colors and 9 eye colors come ready out of the box, along with 23 preset expressions. With 390 expression and 65 body shape keys, you can dig into the beast-like facial adjustments too. Her ears switch to floppy or half-floppy via Modular Avatar, so the same girl can read very differently.

On the tooling side, she bundles a prefab and installer for the expression tool FaceEmo, a dress-up prefab, and an AFK motion that has her riding a skateboard. Polygons are △128,407 (base body △59,589). LiRIOPE handled the character design and modeling with Unity setup by Satania, and a dedicated world called LinneRoom is open to visit. The regular edition is ¥5,500, and a special edition adding an outfit and nails is ¥7,000.

A jirai-kei girl with a downcast air, her blackish-purple bob hiding one eye. Pink eyes, a belted black jacket, a plaid skirt, black-and-white striped leg warmers, platform shoes, and safety-pin motifs stack the sickly-cute details with care. She took #5 (5,280 likes at aggregation time). Her page opened on May 10, and sales began about a month later on June 11 — like Ryumii, she built attention through a teaser period before launch.

Her strong suit is hair customization. Shape keys adjust the front, back, and side sections of her hair independently, reaching blunt-cut bangs or full twintails without any mesh editing. Hair and eyes come in 6 colors, nails in 6, and the outfit in 5 — all with pre-tuned materials — while expressions run to about 380 shape keys plus 47 MMD-compatible ones, with 52 perfect-sync keys (created by Shiroyuri) added in a later update.

The sales design is clever too: the shop is recruiting other creators to make Miriam-compatible outfits, gifting the full set to anyone who publishes one. Rather than selling a model and stopping there, it invites an outfit ecosystem from day one. Polygons are △30,892 for the base body and △138,148 with the default outfit. The base model is ¥5,000, and a full set bundling two dedicated outfits is ¥5,500 (each outfit is ¥400 on its own).

A post-launch update added a prefab that moves your viewpoint down when walking on all fours, letting you roam worlds at actual cat eye level. Cat-like emotes — curling up, grooming, stretching — are included, body shape slides between slim and chubby, eyes come in slit and round variants, and the coat offers 9 patterns including calico and gray-and-white.

Polygons sit around 20,600 with a Performance Rank of Medium — the lightest in this Top 10, and at ¥900, the most affordable too. Perfect-sync shape keys and a MochiFitter forward-conversion profile are also on board. kai 9 is the creator behind Mie, the wolf-eared older-sister avatar that took #9 in my April 2026 report.

From an older-sister beast-girl to a realistic cat — a big swing in style, and a second straight month in the Top 10. The common thread is a commitment to convincing animal forms.

#7: Suzuya / JUSTDUCKY

A male avatar built around a hairstylist motif. Dusty purple mushroom-cut hair, a teardrop mole, a black shirt, and a scissor case holding shears and a comb at his hip, with a masked variant included — a quiet, alluring presence. He came in at #7 (4,395 likes at aggregation time).

The core of this avatar is a bold allocation toward face and hair. Shape keys number 764 across expressions and face-shape changes, and because expression keys and face-change keys are built as separate sets, customizing his face is far less likely to break the expression animations. Total polygons are △252,243 (Performance Rank Very Poor), but the breakdown tells the story: △38,972 for the body versus △110,282 for the hair alone. The product images even show him restyled with a blond ponytail or long silver hair — true to the hairstylist motif, this is an avatar that invites you to play with hair.

Customization goes through a dedicated "modding Suzuya" prefab, with 51 body shape keys. The credits span several creators: outfit and character design support by milkysiesta, face-mesh supervision and AFK animation by Oore, and accessory design by mera. At ¥7,000, he carries the highest price in this Top 10.

#8: Bell & Al / Limited Colors

A duo avatar: Bell, a winged girl who drifts through the air, and Al, a slightly cheeky crow perched on her head. Golden braids with a heart-shaped ahoge, red eyes, elf ears, and a nun-style outfit in black, white, and gold, with halos (glowing ring ornaments) hanging at the ends of her braids. They took #8 (4,210 likes at aggregation time).

What makes this pair fun is that "two characters, one avatar" runs all the way into the gimmicks. Lip sync switches between three modes — Bell solo, Al solo, and a Bell-and-Al duet — so every time you speak, the crow can move his beak along with her, setting up little double-act moments. Wing flapping, the veil, and the halos toggle on and off, pupils switch to cat eyes, and Al himself can be shown or hidden from the menu.

Polygons are △91,214 with a Performance Rank of Very Poor, and 12 expressions come preset. As of aggregation time, the pair is free for a limited period until the same creator's next model, Maron-chan and Marumaru, goes on sale on July 24, 2026 — opening up the current work for free to mark the next character's debut, like installments in a series.

#9: Lila Pyrite / Matsuda Island

A kemono avatar the creator introduces as a "shady gyaru fox beast-girl" — orange fur, blue eyes, a fanged grin, and a black cap decorated with a warning mark and little wings. She pairs a black bandeau top with shorts and a harness, and carries a pendant of raw pyrite ore along with a lantern. She took #9 (2,750 likes at aggregation time).

The motif work here is a treat: pyrite, with its gold-like luster, is also known as "fool's gold" — and the bundled unitypackage is literally named "Foolgold," tying the shady-gyaru characterization neatly back to the mineral.

Specs include 15 finished expression animations, 182 expression-adjustment shape keys, and MMD support. Clothing toggles on and off from the expressions menu, and facial expressions run on the customization tool FaceEmo. Polygons are △69,914 with a Performance Rank of Poor — alongside Nyanyamaru at #6, one of the few avatars in this Top 10 outside Very Poor territory. The price is ¥4,000.

#10: Chiroar / Terai Country

A girl with long, mane-like silver-white hair, round lion-style ears, and a tiny crown pin. She wears a white sailor collar under a navy cardigan with a chain-accented blue pleated skirt and white thigh-highs — an elegant, easygoing look. She rounded out the list at #10 (1,885 likes at aggregation time).

Her biggest draw is a pose gimmick built with desktop players in mind. Eight poses each are prepared for standing, crouching, and prone stances, and finger poses like peace signs and rock-and-roll signs switch on top of that. Even without VR controllers you can put expression into her arms and fingers, which makes desktop photo shoots and little gestures land. VRChat expressions are also preset, six per hand sign.

Terai Country is also the creator behind Nanodebi, the little-devil avatar that took #2 in my September 2025 report.

Chiroar shares her base body with Nanodebi and their siblings, so compatible outfits move between them easily. Polygons are △99,892 (△62,457 in the dress-up configuration), with a MochiFitter forward-conversion profile bundled. The price is ¥5,000.

Stepping back from the ranking, here's what the data says about all 48 avatars published on Booth in May.

The median sits at 744 likes against an average of 1,727 — Misaki's runaway first place pulls the average up while the middle of the field stays gently sloped. On price, the median climbed to ¥5,000 after two months at ¥4,500, with 26 avatars at ¥5,000+ against just 3 free releases — a month where the price center of gravity clearly shifted upward.

Taste: Cool Takes Sole First, Dark Follows

Cool leads with 19, followed by dark 11 / street 9 / sexy 7 / mysterious 7 / fantasy 5 / cute 4 / yumekawaii 4 / cyberpunk 4 / military 4. Cute, which topped April's chart, fell back to just 4, and black and monochrome styles claimed the upper ranks together. The Top 10 tells the same story, with Misaki at #1, Miriam at #5, and Suzuya at #7 giving the ranking its black-based face.

Military showing up with 4 entries is another very May development — and this is its emblem.

WARTYPE INHYEONG TYPE 03 by GRAYMORE+ is a mecha girl clad head to toe in black heavy armor. She comes armed with a submachine gun and a 25mm autocannon, with reloading and taking hits built in as animated performances. With Poiyomi shader handling the metallic finish, this is "cool" pushed all the way to the weapons-grade end of the spectrum.

Looks: Tails Lead, Long and Short Hair Follow

Tails take sole first with 17, followed by long hair 11 / short hair 9 / elf ears 5 / bob 5 / fangs 5 / cat ears 5 / horns 5 / blunt bangs 4 / kemono 4. In the Top 10, Misaki (cat), Shami (shark), Ryumii (dragon), Nyanyamaru (cat), Lila Pyrite (fox), and Chiroar (lion) make six of the ten tail-bearers — each species wearing a differently shaped tail, giving the month unusually expressive back views.

For sheer tail presence outside the Top 10, this one caught my eye.

Ibusan by Ilfa Shotengai is a fox girl with white fox ears and a big, fluffy tail. The purple sailor uniform against white fur folds a Japanese-style mood into a school look, and the tail plays the lead in her standing silhouette — a build made for fluff lovers.

Body Types: Standard Proportions Rise to About 70%

The body-type split is standard proportions 34 (about 71%) / low-headcount 5 / chibi 4 / mascot 3 / tall 2. The standard-proportion share climbed again from April's roughly 67%, the highest in the past three months. Meanwhile the Top 10 shows the small crowd holding its own — Shami (chibi) at #2, Ryumii (low-headcount) at #3, and Nyanyamaru (a literal cat) at #6 — so the two tiers stand out clearly: flagship-grade standard bodies, and small companions you can pick up casually.

Outfit Types: Shorts on Top, Skirts and Hoodies Follow

Among outfit types, shorts lead with 5, followed by skirts 4 / hoodies 4 / thigh-highs 3. In the Top 10, Misaki at #1 and Lila Pyrite at #9 are both in the shorts camp, and combined with the black-heavy tastes, leggy street-leaning coordinates set the tone.

Amid all that, a white-skirted avatar left an impression.

Setsuna by Mokomoko-ya is a white rabbit girl built around a "snow hare" concept. Snowy white hair and long rabbit ears pair with a fluffy white poncho and skirt, and a switch to a black-rabbit version is included. In a May lined with black and monochrome, she drew the eye from the white end of the palette.

Prices: ¥5,000+ Reaches About 54%, Median at ¥5,000

The price split runs free 3 / ¥1–499: 1 / ¥500–999: 4 / ¥1,000–1,999: 2 / ¥2,000–2,999: 1 / ¥3,000–4,999: 11 / ¥5,000+: 26. At 26 avatars (about 54%), the ¥5,000+ band crossed the halfway mark, and the median settled at ¥5,000. The Top 10 leans the same way, centered around ¥5,000 with Suzuya's ¥7,000 at the top — a month where fully built avatars earned their price tags.

On the other end of the scale, this one stayed with me.

Tsuzuki Tsutsu by a keiichiisozaki BOOTH store is a girl with black hair and purple eyes built around a "childhood friend" concept. She wears a white tank top under a loose white knit cardigan — a life-size, everyday look — and at ¥743 she ships with VRM and MMD data alongside the VRChat files.

May Trends from a Creator's Perspective

Pulling from the Top 10 and the full 48-avatar picture, here are four angles worth an avatar creator's attention. I've lined up three months so the March and April reports are easy to compare against.

May 2026's new avatars left me with the impression of a lineup where black-based cool and dark styles swept the upper ranks while a parade of tail-bearing species — cat, shark, dragon, fox, lion — kept the cast diverse. The median price reached ¥5,000 with about 54% of releases at ¥5,000 or more; the trend of fully built, standard-proportion avatars being embraced at full price took another step forward from March and April.

From a creator's perspective, the emblematic moment was Nyanyamaru: a ¥900 realistic cat crossing 5,000 likes on the strength of an invented way to play — switching between two-legged and four-legged walking. A path opened this month for standing out on axes beyond expression counts and polygon budgets: how you walk, how two voices share a conversation, how a desktop player strikes a pose. Together with the teaser-style page openings and the free release tied to a next work, the avatars that rose to the top were the ones whose creators thought through the entire presentation, one avatar at a time.
